Douglas Despres is an American photographer based out of San Francisco Bay. He photographs for non profits & NGO's as well as brands, news outlets and private foundations. His stories primarily focus on social and human rights issues in the United States. Editorially, Doug works with magazines, small business, and travel & lifestyle brands and publications. He also photographs self-assigned portrait and still documentary projects.
Since 2004 Doug has freelanced for six newspapers (East Bay Times, The Mercury News, The Cambrian, The Wire, Foster's Daily Democrat and The Oracle), taught film and digital photography classes in the Berkeley Art Studio at U.C. Berkeley, interned at the Maine Media Workshops, and earned a photo art degree from the University of South Florida. Doug's imagery is collected around the United States and he periodically photographs with the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. Doug is a key photographer on teams working with major brands and covers limelight figures in politics, entertainment, sports, arts, music, and tech.
Doug's latest non-profit work, commissioned by the Life Is Good Kids Foundation, was in Minneapolis documenting the recovery and road of hope of children healing from severe childhood trauma. Latest NGO work was portrait + reportage work in for Habitat for Humanity. His latest personal project focuses on multi-generational tobacco farm life in Cuba's Pinar del Rio province. Before Cuban farm life, Doug aided collective visual coverage on the Oceti Sakowin main camp daily life of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, fighting against the Dakota Access Pipeline to maintain clean water along the proposed oil route. Those images were featured online alongside a 25 page printed photo-essay by Nowhere Magazine in their 2017 Annual Print Issue as well as being part of a collective exhibition accompanying the Nobel Peace Prize forum in Oslo, Norway in 2018.

This ongoing series is born out of my own hair story - a history of cruelty by my family with regard to my hair's thickness, volume, length and color - from a kid up through adulthood. Over time I turned cheeky one-liners and scoffs into a benign inaudible hum as I stepped away and into a healthier community. I love my hair and am proud of it's character.

I've put work and education about specific knowledge and actions into real world results from an anti-racist lens. I've been a part of memorials resulting from police-violence, calling out racist words and actions from my immediate family members, and am currently taking online classes of anti-racism by the University of Colorado Boulder, taught by Shawn O'Neil and Jennifer Ho.
I am a cis-gender straight white man living in California in the 21st century - it doesn't get much more priviledged than that. This status exists through no plan of my own, yet I benefit from it everyday. I recognize white priviledge came about by many centuries of oppression, inequality and violence - and I consciously hold a responsibility to dismantle white supremacy in myself and community. I celebrate majority world voices, and invest time, finances and support as actions. In spaces where I am the most priviledged, I act to uplift under represented voices in the room and minimize my own. These conscious practices are lifelong dedications by everyday action.
I like the approach of creating images, not taking them. Often my photos of people are from collaboration, or a longer period of accepted entry into their space with the results built on truth. All my emails and communications are free of A.I. - they are made and sent by myself or parts of my team - real humans.
On shoots, I seek ones free from colonialism and/or cultural appropriation. I will do my best to speak up, and immediately change course in a photo session if there is abuse of any kind, against me or my team or of clients to one another or against the local population. There is wording in my photo agreements that mentions this, and of possible outcomes if it occurs, including proper public accountability statements and possible pauses of the session / project.

Katherine Park, an artist and my longtime partner since 2005, had one of those struggles. She is a singer, musician, actor and teacher living and working in Alameda, located in San Francisco's East Bay. Katherine has a respiratory history of bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia, elevating her early onto high tiers of vulnerability during the pandemic.
In March 2020, California led the United States' effort to lock down part of their economy for the good of society, hoping to slow the spread of the virus to help the hospital systems stay below their breaking point. The city of Alameda announced a multi-week lockdown in this early phase, which marked the start of a hard journey in the reality of a covid-stricken country which in 2020 had 4% of the world's population, yet 25% of the overall cases and the highest mortality rate.
Shortly after lockdown, Katherine experienced frequent breathing and high heart rate issues. After speaking with a medical professional, she was diagnosed with a panic attack disorder. The hardest days early on in the pandemic saw as many as three or four major episodes, immobilizing Katherine for up to thirty minutes at a time and leaving her physically and emotionally exhausted for hours afterwards. I decided to make a change away from people-based photo assignments (nearly 100% of what I do) and stay around the home through this period, in effort to minimize the risk of contracting Covid, and keeping Katherine safe.
These images are part of that journey.

In Tobaccoland, where fine leaves are guided into slow curls of smoke, we witness an old romance of human hands, plant life, and the soil of the earth.
In Cigar Journal, a respected tobacco industry publication, it's said a cigar \"touches two hundred hands before it is lit.\" The arc is long, through early Spring during the planting of seeds, through the cultivation until late Winter, when the leaves are handpicked, brought into the drying houses, hand threaded together to long wooden beams, then hung up in the rafters to dry for three months. The tobacco is then packed and readied for the government, who dictates all the transaction numbers, as it's standard for them to take 90% of the entire crop. The remaining 10% can used however the farmers like, primarily being sold to tourists. After leaving the farm, many other steps take place before the tobacco sells in shops worldwide.
Focus often falls on the cigars, though the heart of Tobaccoland glows in the farming community itself.

A gentle hum through the earth and peoples gathered for peace and unity, to protect the nearby land and waters of Lake Oahe with the Cannonball and Missouri Rivers from the Dakota Access Pipeline, or \"black snake\" as heard here.
Oceti Sakowin or \"Seven Council Fires,\" refers to the original name of the Great Sioux Nation, who lead a main camp near Cannonball, in which the days string together for the thousands of residents comprised of hundreds of tribes, allies, and journalists.
Over the course of two weeks in the Fall of 2016, these photographs show a peaceful camp. When asked what was not being covered by the general media, Tom Goldtooth, camp resident and Executive Director of the Indigenous Environmental Network said the everyday camp life, so that is where this camera focused. Before and after direct actions, rallies and marches, this is where the majority of the united people live.

Life Is Good Kids Foundation
These images for Life Is Good Kids Foundation focus on their Playmakers program, their work helping to heal children affected from severe trauma. The founder of the LIGKF program is Chief Playmaker Steve Gross, a pioneering clinical social worker out of Boston.
Life is Good Playmakers provide teachers, nurses, social workers, and other childcare professionals with training, support, and workshops that help them understand trauma and compassion-informed care. Part of The Life is Good Kids Foundation, which is an accredited 501(c)(3), Life is Good Playmakers work with organizations serving the most vulnerable children impacted by trauma. Over 16,000 childcare professionals are engaged in the Playmaker Program, which improves the quality of care for more than 1 million kids each year. Life is Good Playmakers' partner; the Life is Good Company, donates 10 percent of their net profits to the Playmakers, which helps cover its operating costs. (PRNewswire).

Shortly before the pandemic put the San Francisco Bay area and rest of the country / world on hold, we held this play in the art studio here on Park Street. Ten women came together to exude a wide range of real life monologues that expressed everything from trauma and hair to power and identity. Two nights, both sold out, and wonderfully done by the cast made of actors and non-actors alike.
All proceeds were donation based, and went 100% to support a local women's shelter \"Building Futures\" in San Leandro, California.

Compassion & Choices is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered out of Portland, Oregon that deals with end of life issues, rights and advocacy.
One of their campaigns features the high profile case of Barbara Mancini, a registered Pennsylvania nurse who compassionately helped her own terminally ill father pass on at the age of 93, upon his request. She was prosecuted and eventually acquitted with the aid of Compassion & Choices' ability to galvanize nationwide support for her case. The end of life assistance issue with Barbara Mancini was featured on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper.
Compassion & Choices brought me in to photograph Barbara for their campaign, alongside a filmed testimony of the events, and support for advocating for end of life rights to the terminally ill.

His DOJ office wanted images to use for marketing purposes, so we decided on two locations - in the Department of Justice building in downtown Oakland and Lands End in San Francisco. Katherine assisted, and we came away with strong images. I've been commissioned to photograph Mr. Bonta before, so it was a pretty smooth. Nice to see the ironclad security at location #1, even though it meant more time + energy getting though all the checkpoints with our gear bags. The Batman-like image, was a fortunate shot, as it was improvised. Usually there's a few looks + locations planned out beforehand, and then it's time to improvise if the timeline allows.

This was the group founded by the recently assassinated Charlie Kirk. It was the last stop of their US tour, and served to talk on far-right concepts. I covered the event alongside press with the SF Chronicle, AP, SF Standard, Berkleyside, ABC 7 News and others. It got pretty intense at times, with variations of this photo by all those news agencies spreading far and wide.
Immediately after the 3rd No Kings Day protest rally here in Alameda, I offered three hours of portraits in the studio. The visceral red backdrop created by Sarah Oliphant seemed like the right feel. These two images were among those created on film with a Plaubel Makina 67 camera.

The handmade Ethiopian coffee by Tiruwok in San Jose was next level, and the dinner that the family invited Patti and me to was delicious. Hearing about how Jimmy Carter helped install their front door was a story that I could see the special pride in. Spending time with Sonnie and her house was calm + welcoming experience, and hearing her stories as she interviewed with Patti was a fortune to hear. Her special room upstairs where the main image was taken was a lovely sanctuary and honor to be invited into. Laura and Ben were filled with kindness + humor and oozed actionable affection in their years of service with Habitat Nice of them to carefully scale the scaffolding for an image, while gentle keeping Ben's curious kids from ascending the frame :) Thank you Patti and Alayna for the commissions, and I'm hoping to contribute more visuals this year.

Douglas Despres is an American photographer based out of San Francisco Bay. He photographs for non profits & NGO's as well as brands, news outlets and private foundations. His stories primarily focus on social and human rights issues in the United States. Editorially, Doug works with magazines, small business, and travel & lifestyle brands and publications. He also photographs self-assigned portrait and still documentary projects.
Since 2004 Doug has freelanced for six newspapers (East Bay Times, The Mercury News, The Cambrian, The Wire, Foster's Daily Democrat and The Oracle), taught film and digital photography classes in the Berkeley Art Studio at U.C. Berkeley, interned at the Maine Media Workshops, and earned a photo art degree from the University of South Florida. Doug's imagery is collected around the United States and he periodically photographs with the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. Doug is a key photographer on teams working with major brands and covers limelight figures in politics, entertainment, sports, arts, music, and tech. The latest of these feat. George Clooney during an event in San Francisco.
Doug's latest non-profit work, commissioned by the Life Is Good Kids Foundation, was in Minneapolis documenting the recovery and road of hope of children healing from severe childhood trauma. Latest NGO work was portrait + reportage work in for Habitat for Humanity. His latest personal project focuses on multi-generational tobacco farm life in Cuba's Pinar del Rio province. Before Cuban farm life, Doug aided collective visual coverage on the Oceti Sakowin main camp daily life of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, fighting against the Dakota Access Pipeline to maintain clean water along the proposed oil route. Those images were featured online alongside a 25 page printed photo-essay by Nowhere Magazine in their 2017 Annual Print Issue as well as being part of a collective exhibition accompanying the Nobel Peace Prize forum in Oslo, Norway in 2018.
